Montagne Pelée dominates the island of Martinique in the Lesser Antilles. It is Martinique's highest point at 1397 meters and one of the most closely watched volcanoes in the world.
Since 1902, it has been one of the world's most famous volcanoes, as its eruption caused the destruction of St Pierre and its harbor, where numerous wrecks, including the Romaima, the Dalia and the Diamant, are the subject of extraordinary diving....are the subject of extraordinary diving.
Mont Pelée also gave its name to a specific type of eruption: the Pelean type.
The ruins of Saint-Pierre and its shipwrecks are the subject of an application for UNESCO World Heritage status. These underwater archaeological sites are also among the most beautiful diving sites in the Caribbean.

Saint-James is Martinique's oldest rum brand, founded in Saint-Pierre in 1765 by Père Lefébure, then transferred to Sainte Marie following the eruption of Montagne Pelée in 1902.
The Saint James distillery produces over 3 million liters of rum a year.
Today, it produces the widest range of "Rhums agricoles". Open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm and weekends, 9am to 1pm, the guided tour allows you to discover the plant in operation.
A small train takes you to the banana museum and the Saint James rums museum, where the history of Martinique's agricultural rums is recounted.

Location: in the Caribbean Sea, southwest of Martinique, about 3 kilometers from the Pointe du Diamant.

The Rocher du Diamant dive site boasts exceptionally clear water, mainly due to its remoteness from the coast. This location is perfect for observing hawksbill turtles, also known as tortoiseshell turtles, which populate the local seabed.
There is also a wide variety of corals and sponges, offering a dazzling display of color!
However, the main attraction of Rocher du Diamant lies in its secret passage. This is a fault that forms a surprising path between the rocks. More than just a fault, it's a boulder located at a depth of around 15 metres, leaning against the rock. The passageway is between 4 and 5 metres wide in places, with a height of 12 to 14 metres, and extends for around 25 metres.

Location: on the Atlantic coast, in the commune of La Trinité.

The 12 km-long Caravelle peninsula is one of Martinique's most prestigious sites.
History buffs won't want to miss a visit to the Château Dubuc (former home of slave-owning colonists), while budding biologists will be interested in the little trail that leads into the heart of the mangrove swamp.
Signposted trails enable you to explore a large part of the peninsula.
They offer remarkable viewpoints, crossing dry forests and savannahs, discovering coastal areas with jagged cliffs or mangroves.

Location: in the Bay of François, near the Thierry and Oscar ilets.

La Baignoire de Joséphine is a wide, shallow strip of fine sand, with a white bottom and turquoise water.
Legend has it that the bath is named after the Empress Josephine de Beauharnais, wife of Napoleon I, who loved to bathe there.
Today, La Baignoire de Joséphine is one of Martinique's main tourist attractions, where people have become accustomed to meeting up, away from the crowds, to splash around while sipping a ti-punch.

Location: on the Route de la Trace, between Fort de France and Morne Rouge.

The Balata Garden is a fascinating voyage of discovery into the world of biodiversity.
Home to 3,000 species of tropical plants, it's a must-see excursion for tropical nature lovers.
The garden extends over three hectares and is organized around a family home with Creole architecture. A one-and-a-half-hour tour is available to discover this little paradise!

Location: in the commune of Sainte Anne.

The Savane des Pétrifications is a geological site with surprisingly arid scenery.
This savannah was home to petrified (silicified) wood blocks, agates, jasper and chalcedony, all of which have now disappeared. A geologist's paradise.
The Savane des Petrifications is, along with the Caravelle peninsula, the oldest part of Martinique.
Before you go, be sure to check the weather. This is probably the hottest part of Martinique.
Remember to take water, sun cream and a hat. Avoid the hours when the sun is strongest.

A magnificent 18-hole golf course by the sea.
The Golf de la Martinique is a Par 71, created in 1976, set in a natural site of great beauty, the bay of Fort-de-France.

Location: in Sainte-Luce.

Built on the ruins of the Habitation Grand Céron, on a vast 2,000-hectare estate said to have belonged to Nicolas Fouquet, King Louis XIV's finance superintendent and Mazarin's protégé.
Visible from afar amidst the cane fields, a windmill marks the distillery's location.
Located in the commune of Sainte-Luce in the south of the island, the distillery welcomes you for a visit to discover the making of their rums, marketed since 1976.
Open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5:30pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm.
To round off your visit to the Trois-Rivières distillery, don't miss the tasting session.

Location: Anses-d'Arlet.

The only black-sand beach in southern Martinique, Anse Noire is 150 m long and nestles at the bottom of a 130-step staircase.
There's no need for scuba gear here to discover the underwater life, as Anse Noire is renowned for the beauty of its seabed.
