Saint-Martin

Fort Louis is a French military fort built in the ^18th century on the heights of Marigot to defend the French part of the island of Saint-Martin from enemy attack.
Fort Louis was built in 1789 at the instigation of Chevalier de Durat, Governor of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy. It was originally built to defend the warehouses in the port of Marigot, where the products harvested by the inhabitants (coffee, salt, rum, sugar cane) were stored.
During the ^19th century, the fort was restored, but sometimes fell into the hands of the English, who came from the island of Anguilla to pillage the warehouses.
In 1993, restoration and enhancement work was undertaken by the Hope Estate archaeological association of Saint-Martin, in close collaboration with Guadeloupe's Service Militaire Adapté (SMA) units.
